Hurricane Dorian hit Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas on Sunday, September 1st, around 2:00 PM. She was a Cat 5 hurricane with winds over 200 MPH and she devastated the town of Marsh Harbour killing dozens. An estimated 2500 people are still missing.
The church building of the Marsh Harbour Church of Christ did survive the storm and is still standing, however, the fellowship hall did not fare as well – most of the roof was lost and the damage inside is extensive, (see video below).
CrossWay Missions has made contact with IDES (International Disaster Emergency Services), an organization specializing in helping Churches of Christ and Christian Churches during times of disaster. CrossWay Missions is now running point with this organization in getting funds to help the church at Marsh Harbour.
Next Monday (September 23rd), I will team up with two representatives from IDES and we will take a boat to Freeport and possibly Marsh Harbour to see how and when we can help and to survey the damage first-hand. We will try to make contact with any brethren who may have remained in Freeport and Marsh Harbour. We will also meet with the preaching minister for the Marsh Harbour church, who has temporarily relocated to Freeport.
International Disaster Emergency Services, IDES started in 1973 at the North American Christian Convention. IDES serves in five main focus areas around the world: evangelism, disaster relief, medical care, community development, and hunger relief. They have helped Restoration Churches with millions in aid over the decades since the organization’s beginning. CrossWay Missions is proud to partner with IDES and help the churches of Freeport and Marsh Harbour.
Don’t forget about the Marsh Harbour Church of Christ Relief Fund started by CrossWay Missions. Every penny raised will be delivered directly to the Marsh Harbour Church of Christ as soon as work can begin in the rebuilding process. Please make your donation here.
Please pray for our safety and success as we go to help where and however we can.
