CrossWay Missions is now supporting a new outreach… in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa.
His name is Alfred Beyan and his work in Liberia is reaching hundreds per year. He and his team of fellow ministers (part-time laymen trained in Restoration church doctrines) are ministering to the small settlements, villages, and towns near Monrovia. His team is called, “Soul Winners for Christ in Liberia” which he started when he returned from Ghana where he studied Christian Ministry 9 years ago.
His team is comprised of 21 evangelists that are committed to rural and urban evangelism and church planting. Since its inception, his team has planted 15 congregations and has connected and strengthened 10 existing congregations. Most of his team’s evangelism efforts have been accompanied by constructing wells for safe drinking water and the establishment of 4 Christian education institutions (elementary and junior high), to serve the communities that they evangelize.
In one of our recent conversations, Alfred told me that one key challenge they have encountered, (although there are others), is the sustainability of the congregations they plant as they are only able to provide short term support with trained Preachers/Evangelists. To resolve this persistent challenge, they are in the process of establishing a Bible School, commencing January 2021, to be able to train Preachers and local leaders from these rural communities so they can go back to serve their respective communities where they come from after training.
The country of Liberia has a population of 5 million. Monrovia has a population of over 1 million divided among approximately 29 suburbs and districts. According to Global Finance, Liberia is the 8th poorest country in the world. An estimated 64 percent of Liberians live below the poverty line and 1.3 million live in extreme poverty, out of a population of 5 million, according to The World Food Programme. The education system in Liberia is a work in progress due to a 14-year civil war and the Ebola outbreak in 2014, which caused schools to close down. According to UNICEF, among most African countries, Liberia is behind in its education system and has one of the world’s highest rate of out-of-school children with 15 to 20 percent of 6 to 14-year-old kids not in school.
Considering all that stands against the people of Liberia, the Gospel of Christ has established a foothold through the work of men like Alfred Beyan and his team. Alfred said that they are baptizing an average of 60 people per month and sometimes as many as 80! That sounds like Acts 2:47, “…the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
As a missionary, I know how difficult it is to raise support to take the Gospel to another country and I also know how important it is to partner with missionaries who are preaching the Gospel in other parts of the world, as well as stateside missions. Personally, I am going to help Alfred with his ministry in Liberia, and CrossWay Missions is honored to raise funds and support this work. When the Covid-19 pandemic is over, we will be organizing outreach teams to engage in short term mission trips to help with the work there in Liberia.
Jesus said, “You shall know the tree by its fruits.” Matthew 7:16. Take a look at the picture gallery below… and you’ll know!
